The experiences that shape my work
Lived realities
I grew up in a pastoralist community surrounded by nature and wildlife, spending my childhood herding our livestock, learning the land, navigating climate change, and absorbing and valuing indigenous knowledge systems that most development frameworks have never tried to understand. I learned the value of pastoralism and how to live side by side with wildlife, also known as conservation. This is not just a background, it's insights and knowledge.
Built successful businesses
At 23, I built a business that grew into three companies, a football team, and a lifetime of hard-won lessons. I saw the role local business can play as a critical force in youth employment, education, and food security. This experience gave me so many lessons and a deep appreciation for the role social impact strategies can play within communities.
Community-led projects
When the statistics came in showing girls from my former school had a 50% dropout rate, I mobilised resources from women-led local businesses, and we started by addressing access to menstrual hygiene needs and knowledge. Next came the first-ever library in my community. DHS data pointed us to the problem, and we worked with the community to co-create a solution using locally mobilised resources.
